TFK Kid Reporter Talent Search

Report national and local news stories for TIME For Kids!


Do you dream of being a reporter or an editor? Are you a good writer who loves the news? If so, then you may have what it takes to be a winner in the TFK Kid Reporter Talent Search. We're looking for 12 students from around the nation to be members of the TFK Kid Reporter Team for the 2011-2012 school year. Next year's team will continue the tradition of reporting local and regional news stories for TIME For Kids magazine and TIME For Kids online.

Professional journalists from TIME magazine and TIME For Kids will select this exclusive team. In the past, TFK Kid Reporters have
*interviewed national leaders, celebrities and other newsmakers;
*written news stories, reviews and opinion pieces for TIME For Kids;
*learned about the news business from award-winning journalists who work at TIME; and
*appeared on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, Today and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to talk about their work.


How to Enter: 1) Include a report about an interesting or unique event you covered in your school or community. The story should include a headline and quotes from people you've interviewed.
2) Complete the official entry form. You must be 13 years of age or younger as of September 1, 2011, and entries must be postmarked by June 7, 2011. Be sure to read the official rules and share them with your parent or guardian, who must sign your entry form.

Math: Fractions

Reading Fractions: First read the numerator. Just say the number. Then read the denominator. Use words like thirds, fourths, eighths, and so on.

Sanpshot: Week of 18-21

Math :   Comparing Fractions and Equivalent Fractions
Reading:   Drawing conclusions, inferring, determining author’s purpose in nonfiction reading. Discussing test taking strategies beneficial when reading a passage and answering questions.
Writing:   Finish New Year’s Resolution writing. Continue analyzing informational texts in order to prepare students for writing their own piece.
Science and Social Studies:   Renewable and nonrenewable resources

Snapshot: Week of Jan. 4-7

Math:    Review place value and addition and subtraction with regrouping.  Lessons on determining money amounts.  Working on recall of multiplication math facts.
Reading:    Introduce traditional literature and focus on fables.
Continue book clubs.
Writing:  Making a reflection on a piece written in the first half of the school year and a short writing on New Year’s Resolutions.
Social Studies and Science:   Introducing a unit on geography and landforms.
